Catching up...Tweaking Ubuntu...Open Office templates

It's always amazing how fast the weeks fly by, and here it is almost 5 weeks without a blog post.  Been in the midst of things and it is always exciting.

Received notice that some of my acquaintances moving to new adventures in their careers, I will miss working with them to increase awareness of open source alternatives.  Renata & Marc, you have both been great!

Spending alot of time on Ubuntu 9.10 these days, even though i just downloaded and installed Lucid 10.04 alpha 3.  It does have a bug with nVidia drivers not loading via the GUI interface for adding hardware drivers, and they need to be installed via the command line.

Other tweaks I was testing out included adding the new theme packs to 9.10.  They are really nice and a change from Sand.  I must say that I really enjoy the ubuntugeek.com website for useful and straightforward tips to enhance your Ubuntu experience.  Some of the recent pages I visited included:

install extra themes for 9.10 - http://www.ubuntugeek.com/nice-themes-for-ubuntu-9-10-karmic-users.html

Install freeNX server and manage your Ubuntu desktop remotely - http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-freenx-server-and-client-in-ubuntu-9-10-karmic.html

How to upgrade/install OO 3.2 in Ubuntu - http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-openoffice-3-2-in-ubuntu.html

I have also been working on creating some upscale presentations, and came up with a great result between Gimp, Impress and these awesome templates which are much nicer than the ones I had loaded in my default templates. I had even tried an extension for Modern Impress Templates, but it did not really give me that many more options.

Tested Ubuntu One with Mark today, and it was not a very satisfactory experience.  I had previously signed up and had wanted to compare with my Google Docs or Dropbox experience.   Unfortunately, it was not straight forward, and the online site did not sync with my desktop for the entire day.  Not sure why it was added to the distro yet.  Also was unable to launch on my Blackberry browser yet i did not see any notation that it was browser specific.

To wind up my day, it seems that Firefox downloads are broken, and I have tried all the recommended repair steps.  Also having frequent crashes with my Open Office.  Not sure if they are related, but are frustrating and affecting productivity.

Looking forward to another week bringing Open Source to people around the globe.  As my friend Hassan in Pakistan has shown to his collegues.....yes computers really can work without Windows installed.....it is called Freedom!!!!
